Visit the Library
In online communities, people share stories, ideas, images and with this module, books and libraries.
What is it?
With this module, users can quickly add books to their "bookshelf" with complete metadata accessed from Google books. Users can become fans of those books and share their preferences with other people.
How does it work?
Users simply choose to add a book, they search the site and if it is not in the system, they can search Google books. The user clicks on the book of their choice and it along with all it's meta data is placed in their bookshelf.
This module can be used a variety of ways. The library and bookshelf can enrich personal profiles, contribute to a community knowledge-base and form the basis of a conversation.
Use Case
Manuel, an avid reader who enjoys reading, collecting and discussing books
Manuel is a 27 years old artist. He’s an avid reader and really enjoys talking about what he has read - it helps him solidify his ideas. He has recently begun to read more on his new ipad. Although he likes reading on his ipad, he also likes owning physical books and seeing them on his shelves.
He recently learned about an online community of artists sharing ideas and resources. He visits the site and reads about other people there. He thought it'd be cool to be involved so he decides to register. After entering some basic information about himself into his profile, he notices a library function on the site. He notices he can add books to his “bookshelf”. Manuel feels quite strongly about the books he reads and thinks that what he reads says a lot about him. He decides to add books to his profile.
He clicks on "add a book" and then searches the site for a book he's just read, "Words without Pictures", but it's not there yet. So, he clicks on search Google books. He sees a list of possibilities with the book he was thinking about at the top of the list. He clicks "add to bookshelf" and sees it added. He then chooses to add another book and is led through the same process again. The next book he looks for "Mapping for Change" is in the site database. He clicks on the title and chooses to add it to his bookshelf. He continues with this process. After adding three more books, he chooses to go to his profile.
Manuel now sees a new section on his profile listing all his books. He clicks on one of the titles and is pleased to see that a lot of information about the book has been imported from Google Books including a description, the authors and publication information. For the books that were already in the system, he can also see other people who have it on their shelf. He clicks on their profiles to see what else they might have have in common.
