Price winning website with more than a thousand stories about Amsterdam East. This story site started as part of an exhibition in the Historical Museum of Amsterdam. With more than 100.000 visitors per year 'The memory of East' has developed into a social meeting point. A place for personal, every day stories to be told, gathered and kept up-to-date by proud local residents.
In March 2009 the website got a new fresh look, a zoom option for images and several other technical improvements.
The Memory of East Amsterdam is a storysite developed by Mediamatic. It contains a diverse database of personal stories and memories of inhabitants of District East. Stories not only about special events but also descriptions on the everyday life of ordinary people. All stories are told and written by proud residents themselves.
In story telling one story easily triggers an others memory. Our associations connect memories and that mental process is what the website builds on, readers flow from one story to another.
The site offers residents a place to share a common past and helps foster communication between residents. It improves social cohesion and prevents community members from suffering isolation. In 2003 the website won a price for the best digital social project. The website has also been a source of inspiration for several other story websites.
In March 2008 the Amsterdam Historic Museum, the owner of the website, announced that over a thousand stories were on line. "The website has become a meeting point for the neighbourhood" said a spokes person in the daily Parool.
