How to setup ikPoll

voting with RFID tags and readers.

What do I need?

  • power
  • wireless internet
  • ikPoll reader boxes, one for every answer
  • a wall for the question
  • EEEpc with IkPoll software
  • power adapter for EEEpc
  • tech support
  • iktags

in case of mobile ikPolling:

  • volunteers
  • suits
  • white bags
  • umbrella's
  • a table for setting up and charging the EEEpcs
  • white tape

How much time does it take?

  • 4 hours for preparation of the website
  • 2 hour for configuration per question
  • 2 hour testing
  • 2 hour for built up on site
  • 2 hour for testing on site

or:

  • 15 minutes per answer/reader

In order for a website to be able to handle the data gathered by the ikPoll readers, you need to prepare the website.

Configuration

Initial configuration (site has never userd IkPoll before)

Configuration Anymeta

  • Add member group as a child of "everybody", both name and value should be "ikpoll".
  • In "ACL admin", select access>use under action sections, select module>ikpoll under Sections. If its not there yet:
  • add a new AXO module by clicking 'edit' under Access eXtension Objects, add 'ikpoll' (order doesn't listen closely, "50" is a safe bet)
  • Save new ACL rule for member group 'ikpoll'
  • Go to /module/MemberAdministration
  • Create a new member, the e-mail should be <ikpoll@mediamatic.nl>, password should be "cyborg01", name should be "Anymeta Cyborg" and group member of "ikpoll" and "members" - of course: click "save member"
  • set this member to visible:me
  • Exclude artefacts of the type 'rfid reader' and 'answer' from LP_MATCH

Recurring configuration (each and every time there's a new poll)

  • create your question and answers by going to /admin and creating a new article with the type question
  • open this article with type question in the frontend of the website
  • click 'edit this page', add poll rules and add answers

Connect an EeePC to the website

  • Start the ikPoll application
  • Configure the application to use Anymeta website, like with any other ik* application.
  • All ikPoll's are configured to pick up their configuration automagicaly from a central repository. To distribute the configuration just made, see Unattended installs and configuration (documentation on Trac, ask system administrators for help].

Connect ikPoll readers to the answers

  • Connect an RFID reader to the EeePC
  • If the RFID reader is not yet known in the website, it will automatically added when connecting the reader to an EeePC which is connected to the Anymeta site. If, for some reason, this doesn't work, you can add it manually by creating an artefact of the type "rfid reader", adding the serial as title.
  • Edit the page with the question. Select "advanced options" for the anwer you want to connect the reader to. Select the reader from the pull down list "+rfid_reader".
  • Now you should be able to vote.

Conditions

  • use powered usb hub or only three or less answers to one eeepc in order to hear a sound

Afterwards

  • disconnect the ikPollreaders from their questions
