Why.The borders between writing, editing and design within new media
are always subject to change. You might ask yourself who exactly is the author in the web: the writer, the editor, the reader, the artist, the designer, the programmer? Surely all those people give content and form to a message individually. In that way, they are all authors, and therefore irreplaceable.

There is discourse enough about the internet. But the discussion often remains limited to speculative or technical observations, rarely delivering a practical, creative contribution. The workshop-series "Authors in New Media" gives authors the opportunity to cooperatively investigate the specific possibilities of these media, creating new, interactive forms of art, critique and design. In these workshops the interrelations between different disciplines will be examined, as will be forms for genres like essay, critique, interview, description. This also means to experiment towards the development of "new media"-specific genres and the appropriate integration of the user's contributions. Which includes a look into the prospects of cooperative authorship.

A central problem of this approach consists in finding useful applications; therefore the active process of working, making and discovering is the main point. This process includes as an important part to bring authors in their different roles - designer, editor, artist or scientist - closer to each other. The topics are chosen in a way that allows for people from diverse backgrounds to cooperate and inspire each other. The workshop-series has been conceived for people who perceive it as a challenge to discover the innumerable possibilities of the internet as a constantly developing area and to actually put them to use.

Programme. In total there are four workshops scheduled for 1998/99.
The first workshop is 'Authors in Context', then the workshops 'Author of information space' and 'Author of behavior' follow. The last workshop is 'Cooperative authorship' .
Every workshop starts with a symposium where a number of speakers introduce and outline the topic. Consecutively, the participants, in seven weekly meetings, work together on projects which they will be presenting to each other in the final session. Additionally, every first Sunday afternoon of the month a public presentation in connection with the workshop topics takes place in the Baby club Amsterdam.

Participants. The workshops require active participation and
self-motivation. It is expected from the participants that they are prepared to work together with colleagues from various backgrounds in the elaboration and realization of a multimedia project. The cooperation with colleagues from different fields offers the possibility to gain new insights from each other's knowledge and capacities.
